Virgin Australia's call for "Employee Representatives"

Virgin Australia has recently announced its intention to appoint "employee representatives" through elections. It's important to clarify that these positions, while touted as avenues for representation, are distinct from union delegates.

Our perspective is clear: Union delegates are the most effective advocates for workers' rights. They have access to legal protections, resources for robust campaigns, and specialised industrial expertise that ensures workers' interests are well-represented.

While Virgin Australia's initiative may seem like an attempt to facilitate collective voices, if the company genuinely sought to hear employees' voices, it would agree to put the annual leave ballot to an employee vote rather than creating structures under the guise of representation.

Despite this, if you're eager to play a more active role in shaping the workplace, we encourage you to consider two steps:

  1. Nominate yourself for the employee representative position; and
  2. Reach out to your Organiser to explore becoming a delegate.

Remember, the Fair Work Act provides explicit rights and protections for union delegates, ensuring that workers' voices are heard and respected.
