Union membership pays off at Ability Care

The Services Union received confirmation from Ability Care on 24 August 2023 that they have been incorrectly applying the night shift penalty rate under the SCHADS Award. We have received confirmation that, effective this pay period, all Ability Care employees will now have the correct rate applied when working night shifts.

What this means for you

Workers at Ability Care have potentially lost hundreds of dollars per week due to this incorrect application of the night shift rate. This win for our Union means you will potentially see hundreds of dollars more in your pocket each pay period going forward.

How the night shift rate will be paid moving forward

If you work immediately before and after a sleepover, you will be paid at the night shift rate for all hours worked outside of the sleepover period during that shift.

For example, if you work from 5:00pm to 11:00pm, complete a sleepover, and then work from 6:00am to 10:00am, you will be paid at the applicable night shift rate from 5:00pm to 11:00pm and from 6:00am to 10:00am.
