Torres Shire Council - Undercooked Wage Offer Needs Work

The ball is finally rolling at Torres Shire Council with yesterday’s first meeting for your new Certified Agreement (CA). Significant progress was made with all parties able to go through their log of claims and multiple changes already made to the draft CA for clarity and consistency.

The Services Union is by your side for as long as it takes to get an agreement over the line that keeps up with wages and conditions at other Councils in Queensland. Our Union made it clear to the Council that we want to ensure we maintain the real value of your wages.

Council’s Wage Offer:

  • 1 September 2022: 3%
  • 1 September 2023: 3%
  • 1 September 2024: 3.1%
  • 1 September 2025: 3.2%

We have explained to the Council that last year’s wage increase of 3% (that will be included in this CA) was well below inflation at the time (6.1%*) and with the current underlying inflation rate sitting at 5.9% we are not able to accept such a lowball wage offer.
*Based on June 2022 quarter underlying rate of inflation.

On top of discussions about your wages our Union put proposals on the table to improve redundancy entitlements, parental leave and improvements to your Union encouragement clause to name a few.

Our next meeting will take place on 5 September. Our Local Government Lead Organiser Tom Rivers will be visiting Torres Shire work sites on Tuesday 12th September to talk about your wages and conditions.

Strong outcomes at the negotiation table are only possible with strong membership. Work with someone new to Council or who isn't a TSU member? Forward them this email. Joining online is quick, easy, confidential, and can be done here .
