Time for Southern Downs to pay up

Today The Services Union participated in further pay discussions with Southern Downs Regional Council in Warwick with the assistance of the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC). Despite the able assistance of Industrial Commissioner Dwyer, the Council was unable to bring its pay offer anywhere close to what we would be comfortable in taking to members for consideration. This is in stark contrast to recent QIRC-facilitated discussions with Whitsunday, Redland, Moreton Bay and Gympie Councils, none of which took any more than half a day to resolve.

We are hopeful that more productive discussions with the Council will occur. The QIRC has offered further assistance the week after next. The bottom line is that it is time for the Council to stump up with a decent pay offer that recognises the current economic climate.

Members know that as your ally in the workplace, we’ll be by your side for as long as it takes to achieve the pay deal you deserve. Together we’ve stared down the Council’s underdone offers, and adding to our numbers will increase our ability to deliver the goods. If you work with anyone who’s not yet a member, remind them that joining is easy online.
