Safe Places Employees – Don’t Become a Victim of Wage Theft!

Social & Communities August 1, 2019

Employees at Safe Places for Children have the right to query the wages they receive and should be using every resource available to them to ensure they do not become a victim of WAGE THEFT.

The Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women requires all Youth Workers at Safe Places for Children to either hold, or be working towards, a Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention or other recognised qualification.

If you hold a recognised qualification, it is important that you request a reconciliation of your wages in accordance with Undertaking Two of the Safe Places for Children Enterprise Agreement 2013 (“the Agreement”).

The reconciliation is a calculation of what employees would have been paid if they were employed in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (“the Award”) in comparison to what they have been paid under the Agreement for the preceding 12 months.

The minimum classification level that applies under the Award for an employee with a relevant Certificate IV qualification is Level 2.2.

The current Award rate for a Level 2.2 is $27.60/hour exclusive of any afternoon or night shift penalties, weekend rates, overtime rates and/or sleepover allowances.  If an employee has been underpaid, Safe Places is required to pay the difference.

It has never been more important for employees to know their rights and request a reconciliation of their wages.
