Gympie Regional Council – Union Confirms Halt to Changes
It has been a very stressful couple of months for Gympie Regional Council members of The Services Union. With the ongoing pandemic and talk of job losses, you and your colleagues have sought answers which Council has been unable to provide due to its own instability.
Our Union met on Monday with the new CEO to obtain the answers you want and deserve. At this meeting, the CEO reinforced that he had conferred with the Mayor and Councillors and had supported our view that the previously announced major workplace changes needed to stop.
This process has indeed stopped, and the CEO is now conducting a 100-day review of council operations. The review’s purpose is to provide a better understanding of employees’ roles and skill sets. The CEO will use the review’s findings to make an informed decision on Council’s overall staffing situation.
We took the opportunity to remind the CEO of his requirements to consult Union members before making the decision to implement any changes. The CEO will talk more about the review at the next JCC meeting on August the 4th, and has committed to keeping our Union informed throughout the process.
We know that there is nothing as effective as a strong, informed Union membership to keep Council on track regarding its consultation obligations. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your Workplace Delegate. If there is no delegate in your work group and you want to become more involved in maintaining your workplace rights, please contact the Union office on 07 3844 5300 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Members know we are by your side every step of the way when it comes to major workplace change. Encourage a colleague to join today, and if you’re not already a member yourself, joining is easy at www.theservicesunion.com.au/member-information/join.
