Our Determination – Where To Next With The Next Brisbane City Council EBA?
The long running argument about the next Brisbane City Council (BCC) Agreement returned to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) on Monday for a mention before the Full Bench which has been convened to hear the matter.
Members will recall that the outstanding matters concern claims by other Unions unrelated to the wage increase. The Full Bench has now set a timetable which will see these matters heard later this year, most likely in late October.
In the meantime, The Services Union has applied to the Full Bench for orders to ensure that the pay increase scheduled for 8 October this year is paid when it falls due, rather than back paid when the QIRC determines the outstanding issues.
We have also applied for access to the increase in parental leave entitlements at the earliest possible time. There is no good reason to refuse access to the improved leave, but sadly this is what BCC did when it refused to consent to our application.
The QIRC will be determining our applications as quickly as can be done.
One of the aspects of this exercise that many members have been irritated by has been the name of the Agreement that the BCC has insisted on, “Our Agreement”. Happily, now that the matter is headed to arbitration the product of the proceedings will be known as a Determination. “Our Determination” has a bit of a ring to it, don’t you think?
