Palaszczuk Government Commitment to Renewable Energy
On Thursday 10 June 2021, the Palaszczuk Government announced their intention to expand the $500 million Queensland Renewable Energy Fund into a $2 billion Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.
The Services Union has been campaigning for government investment into renewable energy ahead of the upcoming budget and we continue to campaign for a just transition for our members working in the electricity industry.
The Services Union Secretary Neil Henderson attended the Queensland’s Future Energy Forum today and welcomes the announcement from the Palaszczuk Government about the investment into the future of Queensland’s renewable energy.
“We have a State Government who is willing to listen to the workers of Queensland and recognises the value in maintaining state-owned electricity assets. The rapid restoration of electricity to Queenslanders following the catastrophic incident at Callide Power Station on 25 May 2021, was only achievable because the Government owns the majority of electricity assets and were able to direct the coordinated response,” says Mr Henderson.
“This is only one of many investments that will need to be made over coming years to ensure our State’s electricity assets are owned and maintained by the Queensland government. We will continue working with the Government to develop a just transition for workers and their communities” Mr Henderson said.
“This was the investment in publicly owned renewable generation infrastructure that we have been waiting for, and a significant reason that we need a government like the Palaszczuk Government. Congratulations to the Premier, Deputy Premier Steven Miles MP and the Minister for Energy Mick de Brenni MP and the whole Labor team.”
